Born in Teheran, Arvin Golrokh moved to Italy in 2012 to attend the Academy of Fine Arts. It was there, through his painting, that he rediscovered and cultivated the sense of belonging to Iranian culture which characterises all his art. His first works already contained all the key elements of his poetics, addressing issues such as the dynamics of power, systems of control, memory and identity. This experimental space, influenced by the visual and artistic heritage of the past, constitutes the central core of his narrative. Seen in this light, painting – chosen as his preferential medium – takes on any number of functions, serving as a vehicle able to skirt the boundaries between fiction and reality at the same time as it redefines a new visual framework based on a collective heritage. Whether it is a rewriting of history or a vision infused with social tension, the voracity of Golrokh’s vibrant paintings – which exchange complicit glances with the work of Anselm Kiefer, an indispensable influence for the artist – is fuelled by the wide variety of subjects that he brings to the canvas: gleams of light, white silhouettes, decadent gardens, shadowy figures. Every manifestation of things real is tied to others through a symbolic filter: in works like Shameful Prophets and La fenice (2023), he establishes a borderline expressivity that both disturbs and intrigues the eye while, at the same time, unleashing a cry of protest and freedom.
